Curaleaf’s Herbology dispensary in Newark, Ohio.

A Curaleaf-owned dispensary in suburban Columbus will be the first in the state to unionize, after a 8-2 vote last week. Meanwhile, 20 workers at a Cresco Labs’ Sunnyside dispensary in Cincinnati have submitted their ballots for a vote, with tallying expected to begin today.

“We’re the first in Ohio!” said UFCW Local 1059 president Randy Quickel exuberantly following the vote count among 13 eligible voters at Curaleaf’s Herbology dispensary in Newark, Ohio.

“We need to still sit down with the company to begin the negotiations process. Obviously it’s about pay and benefits. I’m assuming there’s some workplace structure they want too,” said Quickel. “These are the gold nuggets unions strive for.”
In Illinois, UFCW Local 881 announced ratification of a contract with a Sunnyside dispensary in Champaign. Twenty-five workers voted to unionize there last June.
