Note: Both Illinois and Michigan had legal medical cannabis sales in November 2019. Michigan legalized recreational sales in December 2019 and Illinois in January 2020.

Although recreational cannabis in Michigan was legalized a month before Illinois, and it had many more dispensaries to buy from, the Mitten quickly fell behind Illinois’ cannabis sales. Then, in May, as Illinois continued to struggle with supply issues and Michigan brought more grow sites on-line, Michigan sales zoomed ahead. As Michigan’s cannabis prices drop, it will be interesting to see if overall sales continue to outpace Illinois in July.
