Since last April, Illinois has had 110 licensed cannabis dispensaries, a total approved by the Illinois legislature in May 2019. While those dispensaries have ruled the market, selling an estimated $158 million of legal cannabis in July 2020, Illinois is preparing to issue another 185 dispensary licenses sometime this fall.

Only 55 dispensaries are licensed to sell both medical and adult-use cannabis. Another 55 dispensaries are licensed to only sell adult-use cannabis.

The largest dispensary owners in Illinois are:

  • Cresco/Sunnyside with 10 dispensaries;
  • Curaleaf with 10 dispensaries;
  • Green Thumb Industries/Rise with 9 dispensaries;
  • Verano (using ZenLeaf and other brand names) with 10 dispensaries;
  • PharmaCann/Verilife with 8 dispensaries; and
  • NuEra with 6 dispensaries.
