Just a couple months ago New York was trumpeting plans to give average farmers an opportunity to jump start the state’s cannabis industry. But today, cannabis farmers tell Grown In they are afraid to provide their names for on-the-record comments.
The state’s tracking difficulties began when it chose to require BioTrackTHC to build a custom system, rather than the company’s regular, off-the-shelf product used in other states.
“As long as you get it in the ground by July 15, you can pull off a good crop. A lot of it is about being ready to plant.”
Ascend’s payment is $15 million more than originally agreed in February 2021. The deal calls for $11 million more to be paid immediately and another $4 million once adult use sales begin.
Over 200 cultivation license applications have been submitted, say state regulators. The deadline is June 30, 2022.
“We’re going to need a few million pounds of cannabis to fuel the whole market. With a few dozen farmers we won’t come close to those numbers.”
The bill would require registered operators to include a reinvestment plan in all future applications and require these companies to defer two percent of their yearly New York profits to the fund the CCRA would establish.
Etain is New York’s only women-owned and operated cannabis business and one of the first five organizations to receive a medical license. Its four dispensaries are located in Manhattan, Kingston, Syracuse, and Westchester.
“I think if you look at the older demographic and ask if they are in support of legalization, that’s one of the fastest growing age demographics gaining support for legalization.”
