After eight months of plateaued and drooping sales, Michigan’s monthly legal cannabis sales zoomed up $40 million in the month of March, as Illinois’ also increased by $34 million in the same period, and Missouri’s nascent industry continued to speed up, according to state regulator reports.
Most significant for Michigan was an increase in medical cannabis sales, back to levels not seen since August. As adult-use sales gained a foothold, medical provisioning center owners have groused that lower recreational prices and wider availability was cutting into their patient base.
Missouri reported $12.6 million in March 2021 sales, a $5 million increase over February. While Missouri has over 122,000 registered medical cannabis patients, supply remains low. This past week the state announced the certification of its twenty-first cultivation facility, out of 60 licenses, and only ten manufacturing facilities have certified for operation. Dispensary owners sometimes report short supplies of popular entry-level cannabis products, like gummies and vaping cartridges, which require manufacturing facilities.
